Patch to Protect

Keep laptops, tablets, phones and routers up-to-date.

One quick, easy way to vastly improve security for your business is to make sure your devices are up-to-date.

  • Anything that is on your network, storing your data, or connecting your devices should be patched.
  • Laptops, tablets, phones, and office and home routers should all be configured securely and updated.
  • Turn on auto-updates.  For most devices this will only take a few minutes each.

In the GCA Cybersecurity Toolkit we have tools and resources to help you through the process, whether you are using Apple, Microsoft, or Android. Sort by “Update Your Systems” and “Update Your Devices and Applications.”

For instructions on how to update your router see below.

Updating Your Home Router

The steps below are basic instructions. For more detailed information visit the manufacturer’s website for your router. You will need the name, make and model number of your device.

Log in to the router using a web browser

  • Depending on your router, you would connect using either https://192.168.0.1 or https://192.168.1.1
  • If you do not know the username and password, it is most likely the default login (check your router manufacturer for the username and password).  If it is the default, then change the password immediately.

Optional step:

Update the password for accessing the router to a strong password. For more tips on strong passwords please visit https://gcatoolkit.org/smallbusiness/beyond-simple-passwords/

Check for firmware and/or software updates

In most cases this would be highlighted if there are any updates, but it is best to check the configuration/settings section to confirm.  If you are not sure how to do this, visit the device manufacturer’s website for information on what to do. You will need to know the router model to get the appropriate steps.  The model number is usually located on the back or bottom of the device.

Configure Quad9

Configure Quad9 in your router’s DNS settings.  See Immunize Against Infection for Instructions.
